Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.
Punk music on estrogen. Often acoustic guitar with soft, high male vocals that dwell exessively on the singer's feelings, especially melancholy remembrances of past relationships/mistakes in life. A form of music that diverged from punk in the '80s, the name "emo" is derived from the emotive style of the lyrics and music. This genre has lately been marketed heavily by the music industry to teenagers with bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday, and has seen much commercial and mainstream success. The music has also spawned a subculture which conforms to certain conventions in dress such as tight sweatshirts, tight band T-shirts and horn-rim glasses. Adherents profess to exessively melancholy temperments. Males that adhere to the emo subculture are sometimes confused with metrosexuals; indeed the line between the two is somwhat blurred, though both groups claim to be intouch with their emotional side. The ephemeral and hackneyed nature of emo songwriting suggests that its audience will be restricted largely to teenagers. the genre suffers from a lack of credibility outside the aforementioned demographic group, much like current Nu Metal bands.
An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:
1. Girls say they like "sensitive guys" (lie) 2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how "nobody understands". 3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie) 4. Emo guy is just too much of a pussy. His penis is too small, he's too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn't even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying "It's not you, it's me." (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team. 5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.
This is the sad truth of the emo lifestyle/music, and now that I look at how pathetic it really is, maybe the emos DO have something to cry about!
A group of white, mostly middle-class well-off kids who find imperfections in there life and create a ridiculous, depressing melodrama around each one. They often take anti-depressants, even though the majority don't need them. They need to wake up and deal with life like everyone else instead of wallowing in their imaginary quagmire of torment.
"Emo" is not short for "Emotional." "Emo" does not mean Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional, despite what MTV has lead you to believe in the last few years. "Emo" is not sidebangs, tight pants, and male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships. "Emo" is not the use of diluted, meaningless metaphors and similes such as "My arms are like pinecones," and most definitely is not the rampant use of words such as "autumn," "heart," "knife," "bleeding," "leaves," and "razorblade."
I just thought I'd clear that up after all of these "definitions" in which I have encountered an unbelievable amount of people who try to pass off their blatantly false pretenses as fact, and are slowly infecting others with their high-horse, holier-than-thou bullshit. Because honestly, with your ridiculous definitions, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Britney Spears are/was "emo bands."
Now, onto the real definition.
In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo, but personally, I don't quite follow that philosophy.
Often, more recently, this gets intertwined with post-hardcore, and understandably so - that's nothing to make an issue of, since well shit, at least it's close.
Since the late 90s, though, bands have been emerging in the vein of Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, and the thousands of their clones. As far as I can tell, some lazy journalist somewhere, writing an article about them, decided "Well, f**k, no one knows what emo is anyways, so I'll call these bands "emo" - sounds more appealing than bubblegum pop rock..." and the spiral continued downwards into the current amalgomation of bands MTV has told everyone is "emo."
Somehow, people decided that "emo" meant "emotional," which is obviously bullshit, as 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.
" You have to dress a certain way, talk a certain way, and act a certain way. Everything in "emo" is up for debate, even what it means. The first few people I asked simply said it was emotional music. After some research it turns out that "emo" is short for "Emocore", which is an acronym for "emotional hardcore", which is a hardcore punk rock genre....... Step 1: You have to wear t-shirts that are 2 sizes smaller than your actual size. No really, don't look at me like I'm crazy, no one cares. Not just any t-shirts will do. Those Nike shirts you are so proud of? Throw them away. Your new shirts need to be emblazoned with some weird statement like: "kittens cry when doves fly" in order for it to be an emo shirt. If you made it by silk-screening it, that is a plus. But that requires effort and individuality. It is much easier to go to Hot Topic and pick up a few band t-shirts. Or you can just dig up your old grade school kickball t-shirt and wear that....
Step 2: Chuck Taylor shoes. Of course Nike, one of the largest mega-conglomerates, owning Converse (the company that produces Chuck Taylor shoes) shouldn't bother you as you rail against child labor and how horrible the third world is. Besides, f**k those kids, you are an individual. So draw some checkers onto your soles and spend hours coloring patterns into the shoes. You could write lyrics onto the shoes, that is street credibility right there.
Step 3: The emo glasses. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, you have been living under a rock for the past few months. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has these damn things. They are the clunky black Point Dexter frames that until a few years ago were worn exclusively by kids who spent most of their time in Math labs slaving over double integrals. Now it is chic, so it is ok. Without these glasses you lack the sensitivity required to be emo.
Step 4: Tight ass jeans. Guys, you too can now wear girl's jeans. Why? Well, guy's jeans are made to be loose around the fly and the seat. There is a reason for that; you want your balls to be able to breathe. But now that you are sensitive enough to share the pain of women this is how you can prove it and be stylish at he same time. Remember, you are on your way to being an emo poser, who cares if your balls shrivel up. You cannot under and circumstances wash these jeans though. Girls, just wear 2 sizes smaller than your usual size. And if you are slightly overweight, who cares, let that gut hang out.
Step 5 : A big ass belt. Pick out a belt that barely squeezes through the loops. Now write crap all over it with white-out. The most stuff you write or draw on there, the more emo you are.
Step 6: Heavy slacks or other old person clothes. This pretty much explains itself, be so retro you are hyper-retro.
Now that you know the basics of the emo dress code you have to learn to act a certain way. The basics of emo style: because without it... you aren't emo.
Step 1: Never smile, ever. Think about when Bambi's mother died or when Simba's dad died, constantly. You are sad, the world sucks, your girlfriend/boyfriend/both just broke up with you and you can't wake up every morning without thinking about slitting your wrists. As a result, you are always on the verge of breaking into tears... or writing some heartfelt lyrics into your journal. But we'll get to the journal later.
Step 2 : Your hairstyle. You have a few options here. You can either spike it out, but that might be to angst filled and might be borderline original, or you can claim to cut it back yourself while going to a salon. Women's styles on men are also a plus. The most popular style is the "I just woke up after crying myself to sleep last night" hairstyle. But you will spend in excess of 15 minutes a day trying to get the look of rolling out of bed in front of a mirror. Another popular style is borrowing something from the Cure. Just comb it in front of your eyes. The world is too painful of a place to see anyway.
Step 3: When talking to someone always try to make a reference to an emo band's song. If you don't do this at least 3 times in a conversation you aren't emo enough.
Example: Me: What's up dude? You: I don't know, I feel so... sad. I could barely wake up this morning, sometimes I wonder if I should slit my wrists. Would anyone miss me? Me: Wow, life sucks. You: [random song lyric that has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation at the moment] Me: ...uh, ok?
See, not hard at all.
Step 4: Your journal. Carry it around with you everywhere to write lyrics when the inspiration of how much life sucks hits you. You don't actually need talent. You just need to have one. But if you are ambitious and decide to write poetry or music there are a few basic rules you have to follow. First, make sure you ignore any rules of diction, tone, pattern, and style. Next make sure you limit yourself to writing about only three things: how dark the world is, how heart broken you are, and a combination of both.
You want an example? The dark Sun burns my eyes/ Every time I look at her/ My heart sinks/ My life aches/ Why was a I born/ In/
Step 5: Form a "band". None of you need to actually know how to play a note, or be able to sing anything. Ability is for conformists. Your band will require a nifty name like "fecal song waves of cows". Or if you want to be really clever borrow something out of a campy science fiction movie. Never, under any circumstances, use capital letters in your group name. You are so heart broken with the world that you refuse to use capital letters, those are for people who form social norms. Once you have developed your band name you have to constantly talk about upcoming band gigs. Plaster places with flyers for these gigs. The flyers also have to look a certain way. If your band is somehow headlining you should make sure that you all look as sad as possible... and that lines are drawn through your eyes, or something. It is just more emo that way...."
Step 6: Always talk down about other types of music. Who cares if you wore a hole through your Linkin Park CD, they S**k now. Studio time is for sell outs. You love vinyl. If it isn't the current pop-emo band that everyone loves, it sucks. You don't need any good argument about why either. You have the Godzilla of all responses, "All that music is pre-fabricated."
Step 7: Claim to be vegan. You feel the pain of animals; therefore you refuse to eat the poor things.
Step 8: Get a digital camera. Next take random photos of yourself and everything around you... in black and white. Make sure that only parts of you are visible. That is how artistic people take photographs. You can also drop names of real photographers who are your "influence".
